Edith completed her PhD at Buffalo under the supervision of Joan Bybee. She taught at the University of Oregon before moving to Australia in 1981.
Prior to 1996, much of her research was with Aboriginal children in central Australia acquiring Warlpiri as a first language. Since 1996, when she moved from Linguistics to Psychology at La Trobe University (which is located in Melbourne), a main area of research has been testing grammatical knowledge of young children, particularly two year-olds, using the intermodal preferential looking paradigm. She has collaborated with Letty Naigles in this research.
A second area of research has focused on late talkers and children with SLI, in particular the cognitive skills of children with SLI.
Currently she is collaborating with a multidisciplinary team investigating predictors of language delay; a longitudinal study is following a cohort of 1900 babies aged from 8 months.
Edith has been fortunate in having some wonderful PhD students and is pleased that they are continuing to do research in language acquisition.
